Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process is a combination of biological wastewater treatment and membrane filtration. Biodegradable pollution such as BOD is reduced by activated sludge. Following biological treatment, treated water is separated from activated sludge by microfiltration membrane.
Membrane bio reactors merge prevalent biological treatment processes with membrane filtration to offer an advanced level of organic matter, suspended solids and nutrients removal. This system works by submerging the membranes in an aerated biological reactor. These membranes contain porosity that range from 0.035 microns to 0.4 microns.
This level of filtration removes the requirement of sedimentation and filtration processes by allowing for high quality effluent to be drawn through the membranes. Resulting, the biological processes can operate at much higher mixed liquor concentration, largely lessening the process tank age required, allowing many prevailing plants to be upgraded without the addition of new tanks.
The solid liquid segregation during MBR waste water treatment is attained through micro filtration and ultra filtration membranes. Simply put, a membrane is a two dimensional material used to partition different components of fluids generally on the basis of their relative size or electrical charge. The ability of a membrane to permit the passing of only certain compounds is called semi permeability. It is a physical process, where segregated compounds remain chemically unchanged.
In recent years, MBR has grown widely to replace activated sludge process due primarily to more stringent effluent water quality requirements, space constraints, lower operator involvement, modular expansion characteristics and consistent effluent water quality capabilities.
